The Homeric or Heroic Period in Greek Literature( 1200 – 800 BCE)

The Classical Period (1200 BCE – 455 E)

The Classical period was a golden age for literature and the arts. Greek legends were passed along orally, including homers, The Iliad and The Odyssey. Homer was the presumed author of the Iliad and the Odyssey. This is a Chaotic Period of warrior Princess Wandering sea-traders and fierce pirates. The great writers from this period include all those Greek and Roman guys who wrote epics like Homer of the Iliad and the Odyssey fame.

Classical Greek Period (800-200 BCE)

Greek Writers, playwrights and philosophers include Georgia’s Aesop’s Fables, Plato’s Republic, Socrates Aristotle’s Poetics, Aeschylus Euripides and Sophocles. The fifth century (499- 400 BCE) in particular is renowned as ” THE GOLDEN AGE OF GREECE.” This was the sophisticated era of the Pails, or individual city, state and early democracy. Some of the worlds finest art , poetry, drama, architecture and philosophy originated in Athens.

Classical Roman Period (1200 BCE – 455 CE)

Greece culture gave way to Roman power when Rome conquered Greece in 146 CE. Roman Literature OWES A DEBT TO GREEKS, MORE SPECIFICALLY ATHENS. Play wrights of this time include Plautus and Terence. Roman Writers includes Ovid’s. The Meta- Morphoses, Horace’s Ars Poetica and Virgil’s Aeneid. Roman Rhetoricians include cicero and Institutio Oratorio is a twelve volume textbook on the theory and practice of Rhetoric by roman rhetorician Quintilian.

Patristic Period (70 CE – 455 CE )

Patristic or Patrology is the study of the early Christian writers. Early Christian Writers include Saint Augustine Confession on Christian Doctrine on the Trinity The city of the God, Tertullian saint Cyprian, saint Ambrose and Saint Jerome known particularly for his Latin translation of the Bible. This is the period when Saint Jerome first complied the Bible. Christianity spread across Europe and the Roman Empire suffered its dying convulsions.

In this period Barbarians attacked Rome in 410 CE, and the city finally fell to them completely in 455 CE.
